for Groups and Companies AIDS or acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome, disease caused by
strains of a virus, known as HIV (human
immunodeficiency virus), that attacks certain white
blood cells called T4, or CD4, cells. The virus is
spread through the exchange of body fluids
(primarily semen, blood, and blood products) and
can persist in the body for a decade or more
without any apparent symptoms. The disease weakens
the body's immune system, allowing other diseases,
including Kaposi's sarcoma (otherwise a relatively
uncommon form of cancer), Pneumocystis carinii
pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis, invasive
cervical cancer, and encephalitis, to overwhelm the
individual. Some success in combating the disease
has followed treatment with a combination of drugs
(e.g., reverse transcriptase inhibitors, such as
AZT (zidovudine), and protease inhibitors, such as
saquinovir) that attack the quickly mutating virus
in different ways. hy·per·ten·sion
